We played our first show last night opening for Bon Jackwood and the Wife Dies under the moniker "the Asper School of Business". 5 song set, which we had 4 days to practice for, when we had previously not practiced for about half a year. I think it went pretty well. It ended in a big drum fest. That was fantastic. At least we probably left a pretty memorable impression.

Festival Thyms is out tomorrow. Go buy that shit. This band gets little to no credit from the general musically inclined public, and they make fantastic musics.
This EP is the jumping point off of So Divided, and is apparently the first step in a new direction for them. Worlds apart and So Divided marked a huge change in their music, and is what attracted me to them at first anyway. Through years of listening i would have to admit that their best album is Source, Tags & Codes, the most critically acclaimed, but it doesn't mean the same to me. Worlds Apart is fucking grade A shit. Anyway, buy that shit tomorrow, then buy the rest of it, then buy the new LP when it comes out in the new year. Also, start reading this. Because i know nobody is reading this, and they need to know the word.

Well, I am reading this shit occasionaly and it jogs my memory concerning certain things. My musical goals is to learn how to physically record (plug which cord into which hole basically) and crank out an EP worth of material armed with a case of beer and a weekend to myself. What I wish to do this summer is simply that.

That which will emerge will probably be dirty sloppy and angry as fuck. Really I have no talent or skill but that hasn't stopped a ton of other people before. It'll be beautiful just creating something for the sake of creating it. Those shall be my musical goals!!

Even though nobody reads this or ever will, listen to them. Its a fucking religious experience. Its a lightning bolt to the chest and a phonogram of information.
There's an immediate undeniable interest in their sound. It is somthing old, but it is somthing new. It's all about influences. It's all about context.

They couldn't work this well in any other time frame with any other sound. This is also why the Beatles can never happen again. This is what made me want to make music this year more than anything. Not to copy their sound, to drag it through the mud, but to use it as an influence. I want what they have. They have the immediacy of experimentation and improvisation in ambient noise, that can be channelled through any emotion, and they have the solidarity of structure, and of melody and song itself. Sure, things i make will sound like it at first, but its all relative. You've got to copy somthing to know whats going on sometimes. I dont want to copy things, and if i do, i want to do it right in the right context. I want to design the perfect situation, and the perfect sound for the perfect time in my life. I just can't devote one time in my life to making music now.

Im promising to myself to have a show by the end of summer. I plan on bringing somthing musical to Ferney with which to write songs with. I guess some recording device would be handy, but not necessary. Im finding weird inspiration in strange places like sitting on my ass and watching Tim and Eric, to self pity, to being absolutely stressed out. When everyones out at Foo Fighters, i have no choice but to channel it creatively, even though i didn't actually write anything.
I wan't to write my angry shitty fast music now before it's too late.
I was going to write somthing here about my perception of punk (not that i think punk is fast and angry), but i don't think i've developed my thesis enough. I expect it to come out as i write it anyway.

So, anyone remember that practice I was telling you we was gonna have. Well shush, it happened. It was like a goddamn preteen dance, feeling eachother out for the first 3 hours, but something clicked and some music was had in the wee hours between 12 and 1 in the am. I just recently penned some words that could coincide harmoniously with the melodies and notes we cobbled together. But alas we shall see.

Making music, listening to music and seeing music. What a grande couple of days. On that note, I checked out 2 bands last night here on a chilly Winnipeg's eve that really warmed my soul. A double bill featuring the up and/or coming New Yawk trio "A Place to Bury Strangers" and Toronto fuckfest spectacular "Holy Fuck".

To be honest one of the coolest displays of live music i have ever seen. Oh just to let you know, from here on in, i dont think im going to capitalize my "I's" its just so damn annoying. Other punctuation!...be wary...

But yes, it was wonderful. For the first song or two of APTBS, the crowd sat in their chairs politely accepting and pondering the music. Seeing the venue was a parttime movie theatre, it didnt seem too unnaceptable, but really, it was. C'mon, i can see people sitting at a conventional rock show, or a geriatric comedy night. But this is a bill where the headling band has the word Fuck in their name, gimme a break. After a few minutes of jangling my feet in my chair, i had enough and tried to get a group of folks to help me persuade the people sitting in the first row and on the floor to put it lightly "Get the fuck up!". Didn't really work, but i did join a group of fellow "weirdos" standing by the wall and persuaded myself to dance the night away. Well bounce up and down on the balls of my feet, shuffle around, bob my head and keep my hands lazily in my back pockets. At one point a chick tried to dance with me, but instead of embracing her I could not get my eyes off the band. I apologize, i feel like an ass, but man, i was fixated. A Place to Bury Strangers blew me away. Ill just tell you to check it out. Raw emotion, power, electricity, ear blowing feedback, a place in the drone and one helluva effective use of a strobe light was on the menu and i ate it all up. Guitarist/singer got bonus points for ripping the strings and smashing the precious life out of his Jazzmaster...at which point i believed the show to be over until he let the feedback segue his next move of picking up another guitar and plugging it in immediatly. Genius. Never seen it before and as a big fan of bands who like to trash their shit and do it well, i can say that was amazing. The driving bass, the turned down and reverbed vocals and the wall of fucking sound noise and beauty guitar was unreal.

This is going much to long, and all i can say about Holy Fuck is they know what theyre doing, they have an ingenius, beautifully molded piece of band and they write beautiful, natural, spasmic, jumping, improv but crafted awe inspiring music. Got to be one of my favorite bands right now. But i've wasted enough time here...i digress....

they shall be talked about more eventually i know.

Ah, the internet.
I recently just went through the maze of reaquiring all the passwords and logins for this shite. So I guess it is high time to use it once again.
I think we (the Museum of Man & Nature) are going to practice tonight.
We have not held court since oh lets say December. We've been working on a couple songs, but under the new regime of Turtle, Dog, Mike and Nyk; practice has yet to been had. Last time we kind of jammed and started working on some ideas. Tackling the issues of the creation of the universe and our place in this giant scheme know as "Democ...err...Life".
We have decided upon a set of songs to practice, for each has their own niche that will help us grow together (osmosively) for we dont even fuckin practice but yet deem ourselves a "Band". The closest thing I've come to practicing is Rock Band and...this...and drinking...and thinking...but it is time to actualize. So we're gonna fuck the shit out of the Beatles - I've Got a Feeling, Akron/Family - Love and Space, for old times sake, and for funs sake Weezer - Untitled, and Foo Fighters - Best of You (Mike wants to take a stab at drumming...Which will be better than the errant swing I will take on Feeling)
So I'll let you know how it goes...and if we're still a band tomorrow.
